Inside the Brihat Parashar Kundli Report: A Guide to All 33 Chapters

2 November 2026

A full Vedic horoscope can easily run to a hundred pages, and most people open it, look at the charts, and never find their way through the rest. The Astrometry Brihat Parashar Kundli Report is organised into 33 chapters that move in a fixed order: from the raw birth data, to the charts, to the strength of each planet and house, to timing, and finally to remedies. This guide explains what each part of the report contains, why it sits where it does, and how to read the report without getting lost.

How the report is structured

The report follows the classical Parashari method of reading a chart: first establish exactly what the sky looked like at birth, then judge the strength of planets and houses, then time the results with dashas and transits. The chapters fall into seven groups:

Birth data: the foundation chapters

Basic Details & Avakhada Chakra records the name, date, time and place used, together with the traditional Avakhada summary: varna, vashya, yoni, gana, nadi, the nakshatra and its pada, the rashi and the relevant lords. Several of these factors are also used in Kundli Matching, so it is worth checking them first.

Panchang at Birth gives the five limbs of the day - tithi, vara, nakshatra, yoga and karana. Planetary Positions then lists sidereal (Lahiri) longitudes, starting with the Lagna degree because it anchors the house calculations that follow. Uranus, Neptune and Pluto are included for reference.

If anything here looks wrong, stop and fix the birth details before reading further. Every later chapter depends on these numbers. The guide on preparing birth details for astrology reports covers the common mistakes with time zones and places.

Charts: Bhava Chalit, core charts and the sixteen vargas

The Bhava Chalit chapter shows the houses in three frameworks: whole-sign houses, where sign and house are the same; equal houses measured from the Lagna degree, where each house spans 15 degrees either side of its mid-point; and unequal Placidus (KP) cusps. A planet within 15 degrees of a house junction can shift into the neighbouring house in the Chalit view, which is a frequent reason two astrologers describe the same planet differently.

The Core Charts present the three charts read most often - the Rashi (D1), the Chandra (Moon) chart and the Navamsa (D9) - drawn large with degrees and with the Arudha padas marked. Shodashvarga then shows all sixteen divisional charts, four to a page, from Hora (D2) and Drekkana (D3) to Dashamsa (D10) for career and Shashtiamsa (D60), each labelled with the area of life it magnifies. For a career question you would compare D1 with D10; the article on career astrology, the 10th house and D10 explains that comparison in detail.

These six chart and data chapters can be generated and viewed before you unlock the written chapters, so you can confirm the chart is correct first.

Personal profile and house-by-house reading

The chapters on Your Ascendant, Your Moon Sign and Your Birth Star describe the three pillars of the chart: the body and outlook, the mind and emotions, and the nakshatra that sets the starting dasha. If you want more on the star alone, the nakshatra birth star guide and the free Nakshatra Finder go deeper.

Planets in the Houses reads each planet in the house it occupies. Bhava Phala works the other way round: it takes each of the twelve houses and describes its lord, its occupants and what that means for that area of life. Reading both gives you a cross-check - a house can be described as busy because of its occupants even when its lord is weak, or the reverse.

Yogas, doshas and planetary friendships

Yogas in Your Chart lists the classical combinations found in the chart, such as Pancha Mahapurusha yogas or a Neecha Bhanga Raja Yoga, with the planets that form them and what they promise. Doshas & Cautions checks patterns such as Mangal (Manglik) Dosha and Kaal Sarpa Dosha, states whether each is present, and notes the factors that soften it. Before worrying about any dosha, read the Mangal Dosha myths and Kaal Sarp Dosha guide - many charts that carry a dosha label also carry its cancellation.

Planetary Friendships shows the natural (Naisargika), temporary and compound (Panchadha) relationships between planets. This chapter explains why the same planet can behave well in one dasha and poorly in another: it depends on whose sign it sits in and who it works with.

Strength: Ashtakavarga, Shadbala and Bhava Bala

A yoga in the chart is only a promise. The strength chapters tell you whether a planet has the capacity to deliver it.

  • Ashtakavarga shows the Sarva (SAV), Bhinna (BAV) and Kaksha tables. Each sign receives 0 to 8 points from each planet; in the SAV total, signs with 30 or more points are treated as strong and those under 25 as weak, and transits through high-scoring signs give better results. See Ashtakavarga BAV, SAV and transit strength for how to read the numbers.
  • Prastarashtakavarga breaks each planet's bindus down by contributor, so you can see exactly which planet gave or withheld a point.
  • Shadbala gives the six-fold strength of each planet - positional, directional, temporal, motional, natural and aspectual - in Virupas and Rupas, and marks a planet as full strength when it meets its required Rupas.
  • Bhava Bala adds the strength of each house lord, the house's directional strength and the contribution of aspects and occupants, and shows the result as a percentage so you can see which areas of life have more support.
  • Planetary Aspects projects each planet's actual longitude onto the house mid-points (bhava-madhya), using the special aspects of Mars (4, 7, 8), Jupiter (5, 7, 9) and Saturn (3, 7, 10), and shows which house each aspect lands in.
  • Upagrahas & Special Lagnas covers the shadow sub-points led by Gulika and Mandi, and the special ascendants - Bhava, Hora, Ghati and Sree Lagna - used to refine judgements about wealth, power and prosperity.
  • Sudarshana Chakra reads the chart from the Lagna, Moon and Sun together in three concentric rings. A result confirmed in two or three rings is dependable; one that appears in a single ring is only partial.

When you want to go further with bindus and transit strength, the dedicated Ashtakavarga Analysis software works through those tables on their own.

Timing: dashas, Sade Sati and the annual outlook

Vimshottari Dasha - Timelines lists the 120-year cycle starting from your birth-star lord, with Mahadasha, Antardasha and Pratyantardasha tables and the running period marked. Dasha Predictions then describes what each period is likely to bring. If the dates do not match another source, why Vimshottari dasha dates differ explains the usual reasons - year length, ayanamsa and the exact Moon degree.

Two further dasha systems are included as cross-checks: Yogini Dasha, an eight-fold 36-year cycle valued for short-term timing, and Char Dasha, the sign-based Jaimini system read for career, status and life direction. When all three point to the same period for an event, the timing deserves more confidence. The Jaimini Report covers Char Dasha and karakas in much more depth.

Sade Sati & Ashtam Shani covers Saturn's seven-and-a-half-year passage over the twelfth, first and second signs from the Moon, Ashtam Shani (Saturn's transit of the eighth), and also flags the fourth-house transit known as Dhaiyya or Kantaka. The free Sade Sati calculator shows the same phases for any chart, and the Sade Sati guide explains what each phase usually means.

Varshaphal - Annual Predictions gives year-by-year summaries based on the major transits of Jupiter and Saturn over your natal houses, layered on the running dasha. A control in the Sections panel lets you choose how many years to show. For a full Tajik solar-return reading, see annual forecasting with Varshaphal, dasha, transits and personal year or open the Tajik Varshaphal tool.

Western, KP and the life summary

The Western (Tropical) System chapter is optional and shows tropical (Sayana) positions, which is useful when a client also uses Western astrology. The KP System chapter divides each nakshatra into nine unequal subs, lists the sub-lords, and works out significators by the star-lord method over Placidus cusps. If KP is new to you, KP astrology houses, significators and timing is a good primer, and the Nadi/KP Astrology/Horary software handles detailed KP work.

Life Predictions - KP & Parashara judges each main life area twice: the KP view looks at whether the sub-lord of the main cusp signifies supporting or contrary houses, and the Parashara view looks at the house, its lord, the natural karaka and the relevant divisional chart. Where both agree, the result is stronger.

Remedies, numerology and closing

Gemstones & Remedies chooses gemstones from the lords of the Lagna, 5th and 9th houses, with the metal, finger, day and mantra for each, and names the key planet to strengthen. Treat gemstones with care: a stone strengthens a planet whether that planet is helpful or not. The gemstones in astrology guide and the Vedic remedies tool explain safer ways to choose. The Numerology chapter adds the Moolank (root number) and Bhagyank (destiny number) from the date of birth; the Numerology Software covers those in full. In Closing reminds you to give the most weight to results confirmed in more than one place.

A practical reading order

  1. Check Basic Details, Panchang and Planetary Positions against what you know.
  2. Look at the Core Charts and the Navamsa before anything else.
  3. Read Ascendant, Moon Sign and Birth Star for the overall picture.
  4. Read Bhava Phala for the life area you are interested in, then check that house in Bhava Bala and Ashtakavarga.
  5. Move to Vimshottari Dasha and Dasha Predictions for timing, and confirm with Yogini or Char Dasha.
  6. Read Remedies last, once you know which planets actually need support.

If you are new to chart reading generally, how to read a Kundli step by step walks through the same logic on a single chart.

Online and Desktop editions

The online report is generated in your browser from your birth details, and you can download it as a PDF. Members on the Professional plan can open Brihat Parashar web reports as part of that plan; the single report purchase and the Desktop Edition remain separate. The Brihat Parashar Desktop Edition is a lifetime licence that runs the same 33-chapter report on your own computer, including without an internet connection once installed. The Desktop Edition installation guide explains how to set it up, and Pricing lists the current options.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need an exact birth time?

The more accurate the time, the more reliable the Lagna, house cusps, divisional charts and dasha dates. If your time is uncertain by more than a few minutes, consider Birth Time Rectification before relying on the D9, D10 or D60 charts. The birth time rectification guide explains how it works.

Why does my report show a different dasha date from another app?

Small differences in ayanamsa, year length or the Moon's degree shift dasha start dates by days or weeks. When you compare reports, check that both use the same ayanamsa and dasha year length before treating the difference as an error.

Can I choose which chapters to print?

Yes. The contents panel lets you show or hide chapters before you download the PDF, so you can give a client only the sections they asked about.
