Marriage Compatibility with Astrology Software: Guna Milan, Mangal Dosha, Match Study and Timing Together
22 October 2026
Families and couples often ask one question first: "How many gunas match?" The number is easy to quote, but it is only the opening layer of a traditional compatibility study. A careful astrologer also checks Mangal Dosha in both charts, the marriage promise in each individual chart, how the two charts link to one another and, finally, a suitable date. This guide shows how to work through those layers in order with Astrometry's free tools and software, so that a single score is never mistaken for a complete answer.
Why one score is not a compatibility reading
Ashtakoota (Guna Milan) compares the two Moon nakshatras and signs. That makes it fast and consistent, but it also means two very different pairs of charts can receive the same total. The score does not look at the seventh house, the condition of Venus or Jupiter, the D9 Navamsa or the Dasha periods each person is running. Traditional practice therefore uses a layered order:
- Accurate inputs - both birth dates, times and places checked.
- Guna Milan - the 36-point Ashtakoota reference.
- Mangal Dosha - checked separately in both charts, with cancellation rules.
- Individual promise - what each chart shows about marriage on its own.
- Cross-chart study - how the two charts link to each other.
- Timing - a suitable proposal, engagement or wedding window.
Step 1: Check both sets of birth details
Every later layer depends on the inputs. A birth time that is out by even a few minutes can change the ascendant or Navamsa, and a wrong place changes the local time zone. Before you calculate anything, confirm each person's date, time and place as recorded, using the checklist in how to prepare birth details for astrology reports.
If one birth time is uncertain, say so at the start. The Moon-based Guna Milan is usually less sensitive to small time errors than the ascendant or D9, so it may remain usable while chart-level conclusions need more caution. Where the time is genuinely doubtful, Birth Time Rectification can help you compare candidate times against life events before a full study. Our guide on Navamsa, D1 and birth-time uncertainty explains why this matters for marriage in particular.
Step 2: Run Guna Milan as a reference
Open Kundli Matching and enter both profiles. The tool shows each of the eight kootas with its points and the total out of 36:
| Koota | Maximum points | Traditional theme |
|---|---|---|
| Varna | 1 | Temperament and outlook |
| Vashya | 2 | Mutual influence |
| Tara | 3 | Birth star harmony |
| Yoni | 4 | Instinct and intimacy |
| Graha Maitri | 5 | Mental friendship of the Moon sign lords |
| Gana | 6 | Nature - deva, manushya or rakshasa |
| Bhakoot | 7 | Emotional bond and shared fortune |
| Nadi | 8 | Constitution and lineage |
Read the individual kootas as well as the total. A healthy total with a zero in Nadi or Bhakoot is read differently from an even spread of points, and many traditions apply exceptions to those doshas. Our introduction to Kundli Matching basics covers the commonly quoted score bands. Treat the result as a filter that tells you what to examine next, not as a verdict.
Step 3: Check Mangal Dosha in both charts
Mangal Dosha is assessed on each chart individually, then compared. The Mangal Dosha calculator checks Mars from the Lagna, the Moon and Venus, classifies its severity and evaluates cancellation (Bhanga) rules. Run it for both people.
- If neither chart shows the dosha, note it and move on.
- If both charts show it, many traditions treat the condition as balanced - record that rather than counting it twice as a problem.
- If only one chart shows it, check whether a cancellation rule applies before drawing any conclusion.
Mangal Dosha causes more anxiety than almost any other factor in matching. Our article on Mangal Dosha facts and myths explains why it is one consideration among many, never a stand-alone reason to accept or reject a proposal.
Step 4: Read each person's marriage promise
Before comparing two charts, it helps to know what each chart shows on its own. Create each Kundli birth chart and look at the seventh house, its lord, Venus and Jupiter, then open the divisional charts to see the D9 Navamsa. Check the running periods with the Vimshottari Dasha calculator, because traditional timing for marriage is read through Dasha as well as transits.
For a structured reading, the Marriage & Relationship Report in Individual mode produces chapters on marriage promise, timing, the partner reading and married-life themes, all calculated locally from its supplied knowledge base. Reading these chapters for both people first prevents a common mistake: blaming the match for something that each chart already shows independently.
Step 5: Compare the charts with Match Study
Match Study is the two-person mode of the same software. It is not the individual report with a second name added; it is a link-by-link comparison. When you read it:
- Start with the primary links between the two charts.
- Read the secondary links separately rather than adding them to the primary ones.
- Review the cross-chart layers for D1 and D9 evidence.
- Use the Guna reference and Mangal material as supporting layers, not as the headline.
Keep supportive and challenging links side by side. A study where every link is favourable is rare, and a study with some difficult links is not a failed match. Our Marriage & Relationship Report software guide walks through the report sections in more detail.
Step 6: A quick name-based check, if you want one
Sometimes a full birth time is not available for one person, or you simply want a second, independent view. Name Match uses only the two names and dates of birth, combining Chaldean numerology, life-path and destiny numbers with phonetic Naam-Rashi sound matching. Present it clearly as a different method. It cannot replace a chart-based study and should not be averaged with the Guna score as if the two measured the same thing.
Step 7: Choose a suitable date
Once the families decide to go ahead, timing becomes the practical question. Marriage Muhurat scans a date range for proposal, engagement and wedding windows using panchang factors such as tithi, nakshatra, Rahu Kaal and planetary combustion. For the daily details of a shortlisted date, open the Daily Panchang. Our guide to choosing a muhurat with astrology software explains how to narrow a window without chasing a "perfect" day that does not exist.
A worked outline
Here is how a complete study might be summarised for a family - with every conclusion tied to the layer that produced it:
- Inputs: both birth times taken from hospital records; no rectification needed.
- Guna Milan: total and each koota recorded, with any Nadi or Bhakoot exception noted.
- Mangal Dosha: present in one chart, with the applicable cancellation rule stated.
- Individual promise: each person's seventh-house and D9 findings summarised separately.
- Match Study: primary links listed first, then secondary and cross-chart layers.
- Timing: three candidate wedding windows from the muhurat scan, checked against the panchang.
The value of an outline like this is transparency. Anyone reading it can see which statement came from which tool, and nothing is hidden behind a single number.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Stopping at the total. The eight kootas and their exceptions matter more than the headline number.
- Counting Mangal Dosha twice. Check cancellation rules and whether both charts carry it.
- Mixing methods. Name numerology and Guna Milan are different systems; keep their results separate.
- Ignoring uncertain birth times. State the uncertainty instead of presenting D9 conclusions as firm.
- Using a score to override real life. Respect, consent, communication and safety always come first.
Frequently asked questions
Is 18 out of 36 enough for a marriage?
Eighteen is commonly quoted as the minimum acceptable total, but the eight kootas, dosha exceptions, Mangal Dosha and the individual charts all change how that number is read. Use the total as a reference, not a decision.
Can a match be studied without exact birth times?
Partly. Guna Milan depends mainly on the Moon, so it is less sensitive to small errors. Ascendant, house and D9 conclusions need a reliable time, so state the limitation clearly or consider rectification first.
Does a favourable Match Study guarantee a happy marriage?
No. The report presents traditional compatibility and timing indications. It cannot establish another person's intentions or guarantee any relationship outcome. Our article Compatibility Is a Myth offers a kinder, more realistic view of matching.
Which tool should I start with?
Start with Kundli Matching and the Mangal Dosha calculator for a quick reference, then use the Marriage & Relationship Report when you need the individual chapters and the full Match Study.
Responsible use
Compatibility reports describe traditional astrological indications. They do not determine consent, safety or the quality of a relationship, and they should never be used to pressure anyone into or out of a marriage. Use them as one structured conversation among many, and browse all Astrometry software if you want to explore related tools.
