Kundli Matching Basics: The 36 Guna System

Kundli matching compares two birth charts. The common method is Ashtakoota. It scores the match out of 36 points. These points come from eight kootas.

The Eight Kootas

Varna measures temperament. It carries 1 point. Vashya measures natural control. It carries 2. Tara measures birth star harmony. It carries 3. Yoni measures instinct and intimacy. It carries 4. Maitri measures mental friendship. It carries 5. Gana measures nature, divine, human or fierce. It carries 6. Bhakoot measures emotional bond and fortune. It carries 7. Nadi measures health and genes. It carries 8.

What Score Is Good?

A score of 18 or above is considered acceptable. Above 24 is good. Above 28 is excellent. But a number is not the whole story. Nadi dosha and Bhakoot dosha matter even at high scores. Mangal Dosha must also be checked in both charts.

Beyond the Points

Matching is a filter, not a guarantee. Look at the seventh house in each chart. Check Venus and Jupiter. See the dasha timing for both partners. Two people grow together through choice, not just points.

Run a full match on our Kundli Matching page. It shows each koota, the total and plain-word notes. Our book Compatibility Is a Myth argues for a kinder view of matching. Find it on Amazon.
