DIY Vastu, Astro Vastu or Feng Shui Software? Choosing the Right Space Analysis Tool
22 October 2026
Astrometry offers three tools that talk about spaces and directions: DIY Vastu, Astro Vastu and Feng Shui. They sound similar, and people often open the wrong one first. In fact they answer different questions, start from different inputs and follow different traditions. This guide compares the three side by side, explains when each is the right starting point and shows how to use them together without mixing their rules.
The short answer
- Use DIY Vastu Software when your question is about a property - its floor plan, entrance, rooms and zones - in the Indian Vastu Shastra tradition.
- Use Astro Vastu Software when your question is about a person - which directions their KP birth chart supports or challenges.
- Use Feng Shui Software when you want to map a floor plan with the Chinese Bagua framework, Five Elements and personal Kua directions.
Side-by-side comparison
| DIY Vastu | Astro Vastu | Feng Shui | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tradition | Indian Vastu Shastra | Vastu zones read through KP astrology | Chinese Feng Shui |
| Main input | Floor plan, north bearing, rooms and features | Birth date, time and place | Floor plan, mapping method, rooms and features |
| Core framework | 16 zones, 32 entrance padas, 45 devtas | KP chart mapped onto 16 zones | Bagua with nine life areas, Five Elements |
| Personal element | Property-focused | Fully personal | Optional Kua directions from birth details |
| Typical output | Zone observations, entrance and room checks, prioritised non-structural remedies | Zone compass, supported and hit directions, active-zone priorities, remedies | Sector map, element observations, room guidance, cure list and action plan |
| Best question | "How does this home's layout read in Vastu?" | "Which directions does my chart activate?" | "How does this home map onto the Bagua?" |
DIY Vastu: start from the floor plan
DIY Vastu is a property analysis. You trace or upload the plan, set north from a reliable reference, mark the entrance, rooms and fixed features, and the software applies its supplied rule base. It supports several property types, including houses, apartments, offices, shops and vacant land. Depending on the inputs, the report can cover the sixteen directional zones, the 32 entrance padas, the 45 devta framework, cuts and extensions, and prioritised non-structural remedies.
The quality of the result depends almost entirely on two things: an accurate outline and a correct north bearing. Our DIY Vastu floor plan guide covers tracing, setting north and reading the report step by step. For quick room-level ideas, see the home office Vastu checklist and simple DIY Vastu home corrections.
Astro Vastu: start from the birth chart
Astro Vastu begins with a person rather than a building. It generates a KP chart from birth details and maps the cusp, planet and Dasha evidence onto sixteen Vastu zones. The report separates directions the chart supports, directions under pressure and zones that are currently active in the running period, then lists priorities and traditional remedies.
Because the reading is personal, two people living in the same home can receive different Astro Vastu results. That is expected - it is answering a different question from DIY Vastu. If you want to understand the KP chart behind it, the KP houses, significators and timing guide and the Nadi/KP Astrology/Horary software explain the underlying method. The Astro Vastu software guide describes each report section.
Feng Shui: start from the Bagua
Feng Shui Software also uses a floor plan, but applies a different tradition. You choose how the Bagua is aligned - with the entrance wall, or optionally with compass directions - and the software maps nine life areas onto the plan. It adds Five Elements creative and controlling cycles, room and feature observations and, if you enter birth details, personal Kua directions. The report closes with priorities, colour suggestions, cures and an action plan.
Choosing the mapping method deliberately matters, because entrance-aligned and compass-aligned schools can place the same room in different sectors. Our Feng Shui Bagua floor plan guide explains how to make that choice and stay consistent.
Which should you open first?
You are buying, renting or renovating a property
Start with DIY Vastu. Your decision is about the building, so a plan-based reading is the natural first step. Add Feng Shui afterwards only if you also follow that tradition.
You want to arrange a room around one person
Start with Astro Vastu to see which zones that person's chart supports - for example, when choosing where to place a study desk or a work area. Then check the actual room in DIY Vastu so the plan and the chart are both considered.
You already practise Feng Shui
Start with Feng Shui Software and use the method your school follows. Add Kua directions when you know the person's birth details.
You are a consultant preparing a client report
Agree with the client which tradition they want before you begin. Presenting a Vastu and a Feng Shui report together is fine, but label each clearly so the client does not try to reconcile two different rule systems line by line.
Using the tools together without mixing them
The three tools can complement one another, provided each keeps its own rules:
- Use the same plan and the same north bearing in DIY Vastu and Feng Shui, so differences come from the traditions, not from inconsistent inputs.
- Keep conclusions separate. A Vastu zone observation and a Bagua sector observation are not the same claim, even when they fall in the same corner.
- Use Astro Vastu for the person, DIY Vastu for the place. When they agree, the recommendation is easier to act on. When they disagree, note both rather than forcing a single answer.
- Prefer simple, reversible changes. Moving a desk, decluttering a corner or changing a colour is easy to undo; structural work is not.
What to prepare before you begin
- A clear, uncropped floor plan of the exact area you are analysing.
- A reliable north bearing from a drawing, survey or carefully checked compass reading.
- The position of the main entrance, rooms and fixed features such as kitchens, toilets and staircases.
- Accurate birth details for Astro Vastu and for Feng Shui Kua directions - see how to prepare birth details.
- Remove private names, phone numbers or addresses from plan images before uploading.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Treating the three reports as one. Each answers a different question in a different tradition.
- Rotating the plan to look upright. Set the real north bearing instead.
- Switching Bagua methods halfway. Choose entrance or compass alignment and keep it.
- Expecting a pass or fail. Scores and priorities are comparison aids, not verdicts on a property or a person.
- Making structural changes on a symbolic recommendation. Walls, wiring, plumbing and exits need qualified advice and any required approvals.
Frequently asked questions
Is Astro Vastu the same as DIY Vastu with my birth chart added?
No. Astro Vastu is a chart-to-direction mapping and does not trace your floor plan. DIY Vastu is a plan-based property analysis. They are separate tools and should not be treated as one report.
Can Vastu and Feng Shui give different advice for the same room?
Yes. They are different traditions with different frameworks. Record both observations separately and choose the tradition you follow, rather than trying to merge them.
Do I need birth details for Feng Shui?
Only for the personal Kua directions. The floor-plan and Bagua analysis works from the plan itself.
Will a remedy guarantee a result?
No. These are traditional practices. The reports describe symbolic and rule-based observations, not promises about health, wealth or relationships.
Responsible use
Vastu Shastra and Feng Shui are traditional practices, and Astro Vastu is an interpretive astrological mapping. None of the reports is an engineering inspection, a safety audit or medical, financial or legal advice. Safety and local building requirements always take priority.
