Parashari, Jaimini, KP, Nadi or Western? Choosing the Right Astrology System and Software

26 October 2026

Astrology is not one method. Parashari, Jaimini, KP, the Nadi traditions, Lal Kitab and Western astrology all study the same sky, but they divide the chart differently, time events differently and suit different kinds of questions. Astrometry includes software for each of these systems, which is helpful but can also be confusing. This guide explains what makes each system distinct, which question it answers best and which Astrometry tool to open first.

The sections below explain why each system fits these questions.

Parashari astrology: the broad foundation

Parashari astrology is the most widely practised form of Vedic astrology in India. It reads the sidereal birth chart through houses, signs, planetary dignity, house lordship, aspects and yogas, and it times events mainly through Vimshottari Dasha. It also uses divisional charts, such as the Navamsa (D9) for marriage and inner strength and the Dasamsa (D10) for career.

Best for: a complete overview of life, long-term periods, remedies and a first reading of any chart.

Where to start: create the free Kundli birth chart. For depth, the Brihat Parashar Kundli Report brings together the Shodashvarga charts, house-by-house results, yogas, doshas, Sade Sati and multi-level Vimshottari Dasha. The Divisional Chart Readings tool reads each varga chart from D1 to D60, and Ashtakavarga Analysis adds a numerical strength view. If you are new to this system, read how to read a Kundli step by step.

Jaimini astrology: signs, karakas and status

Jaimini astrology shares the same zodiac and chart as Parashari astrology but reads it with different tools. Instead of fixed planetary significators alone, it ranks planets by degree to find the Chara Karakas, such as the Atmakaraka (the soul indicator) and the Amatyakaraka (the career indicator). It uses Arudha Padas to show how matters appear to the outside world, and it times life through sign-based Chara Dasha rather than planet-based Vimshottari Dasha.

Best for: career direction, public image, status, relationships seen through the karakas and a second timing system to compare with Vimshottari.

Where to start: the Jaimini Report includes Rasi, Navamsa and Dasamsa charts, Chara Karakas, Arudha Padas, life-area predictions and Chara Dasha timing. The Jaimini software guide explains each section.

KP astrology: precise yes-or-no and event timing

Krishnamurti Paddhati, or KP, is built for precision. It uses unequal Placidus house cusps and divides each nakshatra into sub-divisions ruled by different planets. The sub-lord of a house cusp decides whether the matters of that house are promised. Planets are then grouped as significators of houses, and the Dasha, Bhukti and Antara periods of those significators show when an event can happen. Ruling planets at the moment of judgement are used to confirm the timing.

Best for: specific questions such as whether a job change, property purchase, marriage or travel is promised, and narrowing the likely period.

Where to start: the Nadi/KP Astrology/Horary software shows cusps, sub-lords, significators, Vimshottari Dasha and the House Revolve function. Cuspal Interlink reads fourteen life areas through cusp sub-lord chains. The free KP System page gives a quick view. For background, read KP houses, significators and event timing and House Revolve in KP and Nadi astrology.

One caution: KP is very sensitive to birth time because cusp sub-lords can change within minutes. Use Birth Time Rectification if the time is uncertain.

Bhrigu Nandi Nadi: planetary combinations and Jupiter's progression

Bhrigu Nandi Nadi, often shortened to BNN, focuses on how planets combine with one another by sign relationships, especially planets in trines and in adjacent signs. Each planet acts as a natural karaka, so Jupiter can represent the native in a man's chart, Venus can represent the spouse in a man's chart, Saturn can represent work and so on. Timing is studied through the yearly progression of Jupiter and the transits of slow planets.

Best for: life themes, family and relationship patterns and a quick reading that does not depend heavily on the Ascendant.

Where to start: the BNN - Bhrigu Nandi Nadi software includes classical combinations, boundary pairs, karaka life areas and a Jupiter progression timeline. See the Bhrigu Nandi Nadi guide for an introduction.

Chandra Kala Nadi: very fine chart divisions

Chandra Kala Nadi works with Nadiamsa, a very fine division of each sign. Because each part is small, the method is highly sensitive to the exact birth time and is usually used by experienced astrologers who already have a reliable time.

Best for: advanced study of a rectified chart.

Where to start: the Chandra Kala Nadi software matches Nadiamsa indications from its classical rulebook. Read the Chandra Kala Nadi software guide before using it.

Lal Kitab: practical remedies

Lal Kitab uses a fixed house framework in which the first house is treated as Aries, and it reads planets by house rather than by sign. It is known for simple, low-cost remedies and for ideas such as ancestral debts.

Best for: practical remedy plans and everyday guidance.

Where to start: the Lal Kitab Report covers house placements, planetary conditions, life areas, debts, timing and a prioritised remedy plan. The Lal Kitab software guide explains how to read it.

Western astrology: the tropical, psychological view

Western astrology usually uses the tropical zodiac, which is tied to the seasons rather than the fixed stars. This means planets can appear in a different sign from the one shown in a Vedic chart. Western practice often focuses on personality and psychological growth, and it times events through transits, secondary progressions, solar arc directions and eclipses.

Best for: character, motivation, relationships from a psychological angle and a dated forecast timeline.

Where to start: the Western Astrology Report uses Placidus houses and produces a natal chart summary, life areas, ranked forecast themes and a dated timeline. The Western astrology software guide covers each section.

Different signs in Vedic and Western charts are not an error. The two systems measure the zodiac from different starting points.

When there is no reliable birth time: horary

Every system above needs a birth chart. If the birth time is unknown, or you need an answer to one focused question, horary astrology casts a chart for the moment the question is asked. Astrometry offers Vedic Prashna, Jamakkol Prasanam, Western Lilly Horary, Ramal Jyotish and Qimen Dunjia, and the Nadi software includes a KP horary mode. The article birth chart vs horary Prashna explains when to use each.

Should you combine systems?

Yes, carefully. Combining systems is useful when each one answers its own part of the question. A practical approach is:

  1. Use one main system. Choose the system you understand best and make your main judgement with it.
  2. Use a second system as a cross-check. For example, read the promise of a career change in Parashari astrology and the D10, then check the timing in KP or Jaimini Chara Dasha.
  3. Do not mix rules. A KP sub-lord rule does not apply to a Jaimini Chara Dasha, and a Lal Kitab house rule does not apply to a Parashari sign reading. Keep each system's rules inside that system.
  4. Give weight to agreement. When two independent systems point to the same theme or period, the indication is stronger. When they disagree, describe both possibilities rather than forcing one answer.

The Career Report is a good example of this approach. It presents Vedic D1 and D10, KP/Nadi and BNN readings side by side. The career astrology guide explains the Parashari part in more detail.

Frequently asked questions

Which astrology system is the most accurate?

No system is accurate in every case. Accuracy depends far more on correct birth details and on applying one system's rules consistently than on which system you choose. Use the astrology software accuracy checklist before trusting any chart.

Why does my Moon sign differ between Vedic and Western reports?

Vedic systems use the sidereal zodiac and Western astrology usually uses the tropical zodiac. The difference between them is currently a little over 24 degrees, so a planet can fall in the previous sign in the Vedic chart.

I am a beginner. Where should I start?

Start with Parashari astrology through the free Kundli birth chart and the Vimshottari Dasha calculator. Add KP or Jaimini once the basics feel familiar.

Can I use these systems offline?

Many of these tools are also available as Desktop Editions that work offline once installed. See the Online vs Desktop software guide to choose between them.

Choose your system and begin
